Roy Parker Jr.

In this brief history of Cumberland County Roy Parker Jr. brings the penetrating observations of an award-winning journalist to the colorful history of the Upper Cape Fear Valley.

Settled primarily by Scot Highlanders in the years just before the American Revolution, Cumberland County has played a key role in the political, commercial, and military life of North Carolina. From the brutal internal war between Whigs and Tories in the American Revolution, to the punishing invasion of Maj. Gen. William T.

Sherman’s blue-clad troops in the Civil War, to the establishment of Fort Bragg during the First World War, a military presence in the county has shaped Cumberland’s history in ways unlike almost any other place in the state.

This narrative is divided chronologically into eleven main sections and covers the broad sweep of the county’s history from its formation in 1754 through the end of the 1980s. Particular emphasis is made on the important roles of both Fayetteville and a military presence in shaping the county’s history.

Forty-seven black-and-white illustrations enhance the text.
