Volume III consists of records of higher courts of the North Carolina colony for the period 1697 through 1701. With the exception of land grants and wills, the surviving court records, incomplete though they are, constitute the only substantial body of extant official records of the North Carolina colony for the first half-century and more of its existence. In the absence of other sources, the extant court records have great significance for the North Carolina historian.
