Volume IV contains records of the higher courts of the North Carolina colony for the period beginning 1 January 1702 and ending 31 December 1708. With the possible exceptions of land grants and wills, existing court records contain the fullest account of the North Carolina colony prior to about 1715 when council and assembly records begin to appear with some regularity. Governor's papers remain scarce throughout the proprietary period.
