Contains more than two hundred previously unpublished Civil War letters written by John A. Hedrick, the U.S. Treasury Department collector for the port of Beaufort.

Hedrick's letters, written to his brother Benjamin, provide a unique, compelling look at day-to-day life in Union-occupied eastern North Carolina. Included are accounts of battles and information about politicians, military leaders, white Union regiments in Beaufort, and African American Federal troops in the area.
