The Gilded Age was a time of dramatic transformation in the nation and in North Carolina, a time when the way in which Americans lived and worked changed in many ways. This packet provides teachers with an introduction to primary sources available for the study of the Gilded Age, historical overviews of selected topies in the period, and activities that encourage students to use and interpret the primary sources while learning about the past in greater detail.

Topics covered include:"Agriculture in the Gilded Age"; "The Impact of Industrialization, as Illustrated by the Tobacco Industry"; "Aspects of African American Life"; "Innovations and Inventions"; and "Mansions and Mill Homes". Also included are an overview of the Gilded Age, a timeline for the period, and suggestions for further reading.

Representatives of the North Carolina Museum of History, the Division of State Historic Sites, the State Archives, and the Education Branch of the Director's Office of Archives and History formed an Education Committee to make the state's historical resources more accessible to teachers.
