Most North Carolinians know that their state bird is the cardinal and their state flower is the dogwood. Fewer probably know that North Carolina has an official state insect, a state mammal, a state beverage, a state dog, a state tartan, and a number of other intriguing state symbols, including two state berries. The Old North State Fact Book contains information about and color pictures of all the official symbols, along with many other interesting and useful facts about the Tar Heel State. Published by the North Carolina Office of Archives and History, The Old North State Fact Book is based on information from the first pages of the North Carolina Manual. The paperback includes general information on the state’s history, the State Capitol, the Legislative Building, the executive residences of North Carolina, the state flag, seal, song, motto, and other similar topics. Among the book’s helpful features is a list of all North Carolina’s governors, which gives the dates of their term(s) in office.
