Papers of the Hillsborough native who was editor of the Raleigh North Carolina Standard and leader of the pre-Civil War state Democratic Party. Holden helped organize the Republican Party in North Carolina and in 1868 was elected governor. He was the only Tar Heel governor to be impeached and was removed from office in 1871.

Volume I traces Holden's political career through the Civil War and early years of Reconstruction.
