Edited by Noble J. Tolbert

John Willis Ellis entered politics at an early age. At age twenty-four, he served as a member of the General Assembly. He was later appointed a Superior Court Judge, and at age thirty-nine he was elected Governor of North Carolina.

This first of two volumes begins with a lengthy biographical sketch of Ellis’s life from his birth in 1820 until his untimely death in 1861. The more than two hundred letters and documents presented in this volume cover the years 1841–1859 and reveal the rise of Ellis’s career as a public servant in antebellum North Carolina.
