Edited by Noble J. Tolbert
John Willis Ellis entered politics at an early age. At age twenty-four, he served as a member of the General Assembly. He was later appointed a Superior Court Judge, and at age thirty-nine he was elected Governor of North Carolina.
This second volume of the Ellis papers includes more than four hundred letters and documents that cover the period 1860–1861 and chronicle in personal terms the events that led to the formation of the Confederacy and the beginning of the Civil War.
